1  MCLE Credit in Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession

Program Description

In this fascinating one-hour program, Teri Shugart discusses how language can communicate bias and perpetuate prejudice and stereotyping. Lawyers, for whom communication is a fundamental skill, need to be especially sensitive to how they speak to and about others, and how they draft their documents. Because language both reflects how we think and shapes our thinking, it is important to recognize and avoid gender-exclusive words.

Gender-neutral language is now used by many courts, legislatures, law journals and news organizations. If not already fluent in gender-neutral language, this is your opportunity to learn how to incorporate into your speaking and writing word choices that are clear, gender-neutral, and natural.
