While we live at the doorstep of some of the world's great wines, there is something so different and special about old world wines. The balance of fruit and earth, the many centuries old traditions, the uniqueness and subtleties of the terroir and a general wine mystique not found on our shores.
We will celebrate, study and contrast the wines of the three old world wine powerhouses:
Italy, France and Spain. This wine showdown for the ages provides a first of its kind opportunity to taste wines from these three countries in a comparative format.
THE DRAMATIC SETTING
We are thrilled to bring the Uncorked community back to the grandeur of the stunning Fairmont Hotel high above Nob Hill. The storied Gold Room, with incredible view over downtown and the bay, provides the perfect backdrop for these wines of distinct history and undeniable quality.
What better way to get out of the San Francisco summer doldrums than by sampling a veritable treasure trove of 150+ of the most interesting wines from Italy, France and Spain within the walls of the historical treasure of the Fairmont hotel. Old world wine, old world charm.
Savor the expressive and complex reds from Piedmont (Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera), the powerful, yet balanced Sangiovese-based wines of Tuscany (Brunello, Chianti, Vino Nobile), the amazing whites of the Friuli and Alto Adige (Chardonnay, Ribolla, Pinot Grigio, Tocai, Soave), and don't miss the Prosecco and Amarone from the Veneto. We'll also take you further south to explore the hidden gems of Campania (Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Aglianico) and Sicily (Nero d'Avola, Grechetto).
No matter your tastes, you will find something perfect from France. Whether it is the famed Champagne, the legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Burgungy or the hidden gems of the Loire Valley (Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Cab Franc). As you travel further South, you'll experience the hearty Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre focused wines of the Rhone Valley, as well as the most prized wines of all - the great Cabernet & Merlot based wines of Bordeaux. Some beautiful Provence Rose and lesser known gems from the Languedoc and Alsace will surprise.
You will taste the bold and hearty reds of the Priorat and Ribera del Duero, the classic earthy reds from Rioja, sparkling cava from Penedès, as well as wines from up and coming regions like Jumilla, Toro, Rías Baixas and La Mancha. You will taste lots of Tempranillo – the legendary red grape of Spain, Monastrell (Mourvedre), Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha (Grenache), Carinena (Carignane), Albariño, Verdejo, Viura, along with an array of different styles of Sherry.
A live flamenco show from the famed Caminos Flamencos with dancers, singers and guitarists will perfectly complement the wines, while DJ Sol will spin european lounge grooves with a healthy dose of Spanish, Italian & French pop. A light artisan cheese spread will be provided along with tasting stations featuring KRAVE Jerky and KIND Snacks. And we'll keep the evening going with an unofficial after party at the legendary Tonga Room next door.
The Italians swear: "In vino veritas" or "In wine there is truth"
The French philosopher Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin proclaimed:
"A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine."
When a wine is extraordinary, the Spanish say “Beber este vino es como hablar con Dios” or “Tasting this wine is like talking with God”. We think you may just might concur by the end of the evening.
