How work is changing, and what this means to you

Monday, May 13th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

As tech innovation is democratizing entrepreneurship, it's also changing how companies hire, the way we view our careers and the very meaning of "work" itself. A rising tide of entrepreneurial professionals are using new technologies and staffing approaches to power their businesses. At the same time, an increasing number of independent professionals are creating their own unique careers, now that work no longer needs to be a place we go from 9am - 5pm. Join General Assembly for a discussion of how our workforce has already fundamentally changed, the forces of disruption at play, how companies will need to adapt and what careers may look like down the road.

Come with questions. Maybe you're curious about whether Millennials are more entrepreneurial than prior generations? Or what workforce changes mean for people trying to build businesses? And what changes have we seen in the typical career path? You'll hear discussion of questions like these (and anything you'd like to bring to the table!) between two top experts on the future of work -- Gary Swart, CEO of the online workplace oDesk (an entrepreneur himself with perspective on how to staff effectively today), and Dan Schawbel, founder of Millennial Branding (a career expert focused on changes impacting the younger generations especially).

Gary Swart is the CEO of oDesk, the world’s largest online workplace—on which more than 35 million hours were worked in 2012 alone. Gary is a thought leader in entrepreneurship; how best to hire and manage teams; and the future of work, including online work. He is passionate about helping small businesses thrive, fueled by his extensive experience working with startups and small businesses that use oDesk, as well as by mentoring entrepreneurs and business school students. Previously, he led SMB Sales for the Americas at IBM’s Rational Software Product Group, and prior to that served as VP of Worldwide Sales at Intellibank. He has been featured by Forbes, TechCrunch, BBC, National Public Radio, CNBC and Bloomberg TV.

Dan Schawbel is the Managing Partner of Millennial Branding. He is the author of the #1 international bestselling book, Me 2.0: 4 Steps to Building Your Future, and the soon to be released, Promote Yourself: The New Rules For Career Success. Dan was named to the Forbes Top Social Media Influencer List in 2013, Inc. Magazine 30 Under 30 List in 2010, the Forbes Magazine 30 Under 30 List in 2012, and BusinessWeek cites him as someone entrepreneurs should follow on Twitter.
