Biology, Bioinformatics, and Big Data: Trying to survive in the trenches

Goal: To understand the generation, analysis, and application of next generation sequencing (NGS) data to support modern-day biomedical research.
Learning Objectives: Following this session, participants should be able to: 1. Appreciate the differences between hypothesis-driven and discovery-driven biomedical research;
2. Describe the recent revolution in sequencing technologies;
3. Understand the data generated by NGS and the challenges in managing that data;
4. Describe some of the approaches used to analyze NGS data; and
5. Provide specific examples of the use of NGS technology to support biological discovery.
The PSTP is designed to provide practical assistance in the areas of scientific writing (such as the development of grants and scientific manuscripts), scientific presentations, career development, and leadership. Developed and sponsored by the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), the target audience of the PSTP is all faculty, staff, trainees and students interested in expanding their professional skills in the stated areas. Seminars are held monthly on the second Thursday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. in West Pavilion Room E.
