Conventional Prompt Global Strike: A Fresh Perspective
Over a decade ago, DoD proposed to develop advanced conventional weapons that could strike anywhere in the world in less than an hour. The concept has been dubbed "Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS)." Both the Obama Administration and the previous administration have endorsed the general need for these weapons. Several unresolved issues, however, have obstructed progress on development and deployment of CPGS weapons.
Tom Scheber, the Vice President of the National Institute for Public Policy will provide a fresh perspective on Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS) . The need for a fresh look at the proposed CPGS capability results from several factors including:
- Technical options now available for CPGS weapons;
- The impact of a new arms control treaty regime (the New START Treaty is in effect; the START Treaty has expired); and
- Newly available information about Russian early warning and attack assessment capabilities. What can the Russians see and how might they respond to the launch of CPGS weapons?
