OCEMA - October
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM (PDT)
160,000 military veterans discharge each year and as the war in Afghanistan winds down in 2014, some 85,000 veterans will join the ranks of those discharged. The unemployment rate for transitioning military veterans hovers around 12-13% and with the influx of returning troops, this could lead to higher unemployment.
Come here what’s being done about this challenge at Qualcomm, the world’s largest fabless semiconductor company and one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in America 14 years in a row. It’s helping veterans with technical job experience, professional development, and career transition skills – but it’s not a hiring program for Qualcomm, rather a community outreach program designed to help veterans find employment.
Ed Hidalgo, Senior Director of Staffing, will be our guest speaker and he will share details of the Qualcomm Corporate Integration Program (QCIP) for Warrior Veterans, you will learn:
· How the program was developed and adopted by business leaders
· How Qualcomm developed relationships with military departments to find transitioning veterans
· How the program curriculum was developed with the help of other organizations
· How they trained Qualcomm staff to participate in the program
· How they diffused internal concerns about helping wounded veterans
· How they translate military skills to civilian skills
Ed Hidalgo is Senior Director of Staffing at Qualcomm, responsible for global contingent workforce and supplier management, business unit specific full-time hiring and career development teams. He is the executive sponsor for Workforce Development Labs, a program to promote youth engagement in workforce development. A graduate of the University of Miami, he is also dedicated to development initiatives in his community.
