NYJavaSIG

Our August meeting is going to be cloudy. But that's a good thing!

The vast majority of Java developers have had some experience with public cloud computing infrastructures such as AWS. But what about building your own cloud-computing frameworks using open-source cloud software for either internal use or if you wanted to run your own IaaS?  How would you handle cloud portability so you have the flexibility of quickly migrating to get the best price, or how would you handle multi-tenancy to optimize and manage your computing resources?

Our August meeting will feature two well-known cloud alpha developers.  Everett Toews (OpenStack expert from Rackspace) will show us how to leverage an abstraction for cloud portability using Apache jclouds. And Nuwan Bandara (Senior Technical Lead from WSO2) will go into the details of how to optimize IaaS resources with Apache Stratos. Both tools are fantastic open source tools.

Introduction to Apache jclouds for Cloud Portability

Apache jclouds is an open source multi-cloud toolkit for the Java platform that gives you the freedom to create applications that are portable across clouds while giving you full control to use cloud-specific features.

There is a great community behind this toolkit working together to provide a better experience for developers in the cloud. Their goal is to simplify the control of many different clouds while still giving you the freedom to use cloud-specific features. The result is a toolkit that allows developers to write better code, in a shorter period of time, that works with many clouds.

Using Apache Stratos for High Performance IaaS Control

The design and architecture of Stratos present some unique advantages to the users. The multi-tenancy model, where it allows high multi-tenancy density within a deployment is a key advantage. The ability to control IaaS resources, per cloud, per zone, per region paves the way to easily achieve high availability and disaster recovery. Multi-factor based auto scaling, dynamic load balancing and cloud busting are some of the other key noteworthy differentiators in Stratos PaaS. This session will highlight the advantages of using Apache Stratos as your PaaS framework.
