Presenter BIO's: 

 

 

Philip D. Babin, CPA, CMA 

 

Philip has a diverse background in accounting beginning in the tax department of Arthur Andersen in Memphis. He then joined Perkins Restaurants and was their Tax Director for 13 years, when Perkins was a publicly-traded partnership. Philip worked at FedEx in both the corporate tax department and ultimately as Managing Director of U.S. Payroll and Disbursements. After owning a small enrichment education business, he returned to public accounting at Thompson Dunavant PLC --- which was acquired by the top ten national accounting services provider, CBIZ. He is a Senior Tax Manager at CBIZ and is in charge of the Memphis office’s external CPE events.

 

Philip specializes in the areas of pass-through entity taxation. He is a graduate of Christian Brothers University, and returned to school later to obtain his MBA with a focus in Accounting from the University of Memphis. Philip is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Memphis Chapter of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) as well as the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA). Philip received his Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) from the American Payroll Association and his Certified Management Accounting (CMA) designation.

 

Outside of the office, Philip is an occasional adjunct tax instructor with the University of Memphis, teaching federal income tax and with CBU teaching Accounting for MBAs.   His other interests including teaching Habits of Health to help participants achieve their health goals, as well as leading an adult Life Group at Bellevue Baptist Church. Timothy J. Finnell, CLU, ChFC

Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist   …   President and Founder, Group Benefits LLC

Tim is one of the Mid-South’s leading authorities on the Affordable Care Act ("ACA" or “Obamacare”), having been accredited in January 2013 as a Certified Healthcare Reform Specialist – the first benefits specialist to receive that designation.

As an ACA expert, Tim has written on the subject for The Commercial Appeal and has been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, CNNMoney.com, The Tennessean, Memphis Daily News, the Memphis Business Journal, and Entrepreneur magazine.

Charlene Spiceland, PhD, CMA, CPA 

 

To pursue her passion for teaching, Charlene Spiceland retired in 2008 as Chief Financial Officer of EFS Transportation, a division of First Data Corporation. Prior to embarking on her accounting career, she owned and operated Tennessee Moving and Storage Corporation. Later, her love of accounting led to her earning her Master of Science in Accounting Systems at the University of Memphis. (She previously had earned a M.Ed.–Mathematics Education, also at the U of M.) Her accounting career began with a brief stint as a tax analyst for International Paper. Later positions included Accounting Officer, External Reporting and Disclosure at First Horizon Corporation, where she headed the group responsible for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance as well as Controller positions at the Memphis Group and Concord EFS.

While an Instructor at the U of M, she served as Executive Assistant to the Director of the School of Accountancy and earned her Ph.D. in May of 2013. Her area of research is Healthcare Accounting. Dr. Spiceland has been the recipient of a variety of research, advising, and teaching awards, including the College Honors Teacher of the Year Award and the university’s highest teaching honor: the University Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Spiceland is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant. She is a member of the Tennessee Society of CPA's and the Institute of Management Accountants. She has been president of the MidSouth chapter of the IMA and led the chapter to 1st place among all chapters nationally.

 

 

Ronnie Williams, MBA

Director of Finance     …     Del-Nat Tire Corporation

As Director of Finance for Health Choice, Ronnie was responsible for the accounting, finance, education and information technology functions at a Physician-Hospital Organization (Health Choice). Health Choice is an innovative, healthcare company that is jointly owned by a large regional hospital system and a large group of physicians. Efforts at Health Choice included physician and office staff education, bundled payments, a patient centered medical home, and wellness programs. The strategic goal of Health Choice is to be clinically integrated and to function as an Accountable Care Organization.

Ronnie has written multiple times on the subject of healthcare for the Memphis Daily News.

In addition to his role as Director of Finance, Ronnie teaches accounting classes at night at the University of Memphis. Typically, he teaches financial and cost accounting.

Ronnie is also a licensed insurance broker for life, accident and health insurance in the State of Tennessee.

Ronnie earned his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Memphis and earned his MBA at Union University.

James Plecnik 

 

James has a generalist background in accounting; having dealt with tax, audit, and consulting work for a CPA firm in North Carolina for over 4 years. While practicing accounting he was recruited to run his Alma mater’s accounting tutoring program, and his love for academics eventually lead him back to the university environment full time. James is now a Ph.D. Student as well as an instructor for the school of accountancy at The University of Memphis. He also continues to run a small investment partnership that he founded 5 years ago.  

James specializes in business tax issues and has published multiple articles on tax and legal topics. He graduated with an accounting degree from Belmont Abbey College (NC), and a masters in accountancy from The University of Memphis. James is a member of various professional organizations including the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) and the American Accounting Association (AAA). He also leads the University of Memphis’ chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP).

In his spare time James is a frequent volunteer at underprivileged schools and various other charitable functions. He is also a prolific volunteer tutor for accounting and business classes at The University of Memphis. He can be reached at jmplcnik@memphis.edu.

 

 

Tom Oldham, CMA, CFM

Tom Oldham has over 20 years of experience in Business Analytics, Finance, Accounting and general Information Technology support with Mueller Industries. Tom is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified in Financial Management (CFM). He was a past board member of the Memphis/Mid-South Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and past member of several IMA national committees on Information Technology. Prior to Mueller Industries, Tom was in Public Accounting. He received a B.S. in Business Administration with a major of finance from Kansas State University. Cheryl Burch Citrone 

 

Cheryl Burch Citrone is a Partner and Executive Recruiter with Vaco, one of the nation’s fastest-growing privately held consulting and executive placement companies in the US. She currently heads the company’s Vaco Logistics & Operations team – focusing on permanent placement in distribution, supply chain and transportation – and has shared her career-planning insights with a variety of media outlets, including WHBQ FOX 13 and WREG News Channel 3. She is passionate in her support of the Mid-South transportation and logistics community.

Citrone is a member of the board of directors for the Mid-South chapter of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and has been a guest lecturer for the University of Memphis’ Supply Chain Management Program. She also serves as an Advisor for the Society of Female Transportation Professionals and the Marketing and Supply Chain Advisory Board associated with the University of Memphis. Cheryl is also an active supporter of The Traffic Club of Memphis and the Memphis World Trade Club.

She is a University of Memphis graduate and holds a BPS in Computer Education.

Cheryl’s career in recruiting began in 2002 when she was downsized from her IT Management position. “The company was having financial trouble, cut 6000 positions and, unfortunately, one was mine. But, through that experience, I gained a heart for those candidates who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. I certainly understand the range of emotions that go along with receiving that pink slip. Hopefully I can be a beacon of hope because my career change has certainly worked out for me!”

 

 

Michael Esposito 

 

Mike Esposito is the Founder and Principle Consultant of PINpoint Visibility, a LinkedIn Professional Internet Networking marketing firm. His background includes 25 years working for FedEx Express in Memphis TN, holding many professional and managerial positions in IT and Sales. He has also been an active adjunct professor at the University of Phoenix and Southwest TN Community College. Since leaving to start his own business he has taken interest in helping college students, those in Career Transition, professionals, and small businesses to be successful utilizing LinkedIn, the number one professional social media platform.
