nourish your soul, nourish your stomach w. mission chinese food
Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, CA
At Asian Women's Shelter, we understand the value of food and how closely it is connected to people's sense of home, comfort and safety, and their sense of owning their own lives again by being able to make a nourishing, home-cooked meal. Part of our making AWS a safe home for people is having foods that are familiar and comforting to them. From cupboards full of spices, cooking supplies, and utensils from all around the world to purchasing goods from a wide range of markets, we value having the familiar essentials. At any given day, we may have 21 different kinds of rice --red, brown, sticky, basmati, jasmine, brown jasmine, couscous, sushi rice--because many times that's the staple of someone's meal and their own healing. And at the end of the day, food is a big, big deal.
Celebrate our love of food and feast at one of the country's hottest destination restaurants; what NYT food critic, Mark Bittman describes as "like a creature from 'Alien,' an unreal exotic bursts out of a normal skin." His words, not ours. Read more here.
Tickets are $50 each for an 8-course family style meal served with a glass of wine. Seating starts promptly at 4:30pm! Due to MCF's capacity, end-time will be enforced.
Seating is limited to 40. Vegetarians and vegans will be seated at the communal table.
All proceeds benefit Asian Women's Shelter.
When & Where
Asian Women's Shelter
The mission of Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) is to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, economic and political self-determination of individuals. We welcome all survivors, and have the cultural and language capacity to address the specific needs of immigrant, low-income, queer and trans survivors. We provide language accessibility, educational programs, community-based initiatives, trainings and advocacy. All of our services and programs seek to address an interplay of factors affecting survivors, including sexism, racism, ageism, classism, ableism and heterosexism.
