Event Details

Long Beach Cinematheque is once again proud to partner with the talented musicians of the Balboa Amusement Company Orchestra to breathe new sonic life into another silent classic - under the stars at Long Beach’s legendary Sunnyside Cemetery!  Join us Thursday, October 10 for an unforgettable evening of silent cinema and live music, as we present F.W. Murnau’s terrifying 1922 German vampire classic, Nosferatu.

Assembled by Long Beach’s own prolific singer-songwriters Ellen Warkentine and Alyssandra Nighswonger, the Balboa Amusement Company Orchestra is a band of local musicians who recently formed to write and perform a live score for a Long Beach Cinematheque screening ofThe Artist, and who are already hard at work writing and rehearsing their follow-up live score for this special event, the first of its kind at Sunnyside!

Originally titled Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (or Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror)Murnau’s film is noted as the first – and famously unauthorized – adaptation of Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel Dracula. Although director Murnau took precautions such as changing the word “vampire” to “nosferatu,” and “Count Dracula” to “Count Orlok,” Stoker’s estate nevertheless ordered all prints to be destroyed – fortunately for the history of cinema, one print survived, leading to Nosferatu’s legacy as a celebrated classic in international cinema.

$10 Admission.  We thank our event partners Balboa Amusement Company Orchestra, Councilman James Johnson, and Sunnyside Cemetery for making this event possible!    Thanks also to our friends at Long Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau and Shoreline Village, without whose support we would not be able to bring outdoor films to the community.

Guests are encouraged to bring low-back chairs and/or blankets for their comfort.   FOOD/PICNIC BASKETS WELCOME!  Limited parking is available on site – there is additional ample street parking in front of, and west of, Sunnyside Cemetery.
