Event Details

One of the tools used by the Spanish in their effort to convert the indigenous peoples of the New World to Christianity was music. Discovering that many of the cultures they encountered possessed an uncanny gift for music, the missionaries used this innate talent to their advantage in their conversion, and in the process, they created an enormous corpus of sacred works. The music produced in Spain’s colonies in the New World was just as ornate, complex, and beautiful as anything found in Europe, and this music is only recently being rediscovered and given the attention it deserves. Consisting of music drawn from the cathedral and mission archives of Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru, this concert will bring together the choir, soloists, instrumentalists, and our loud band (shawms, sackbuts, and dulcians) for works from 17th-century Latin America, and the choir and orchestra for the 18th-century fare. Along with music by Zipoli, Padilla, Herrando, Billoni, and the ever-popular Anonymous, we'll perform Ignacio de Jerúsalem’s 'Matins for Our Lady, the Virgin of Guadalupe,' an unjustly neglected work that is one of the largest and most beautiful settings of the morning prayer service to be produced in baroque Latin America. To compliment our regular performance in Austin, we'll return to San Antonio's historic and beautifully-restored Mission Concepción, where audience members will experience this stunning music in a setting not unlike the churches where it was first performed.

Informal pre-concert talk begins at 6:30pm.

Austin Baroque Orchestra & Chorus

Now in its third season, Settecento is an Austin-based orchestra and chorus dedicated to presenting historically informed performances of musical works from the 17th and 18th centuries. With programming that is both innovative and carefully researched by the artistic director, the ensemble’s mission is to promote early music in Central Texas.

Each season features a series of four concerts along with additional performances of chamber works. These diverse concerts can vary from a cappella Renaissance motets to large-scale Baroque cantatas, and from Classical-era chamber music to larger orchestral works. Preceding each concert is an informal talk about the music led by founder and artistic director, Billy Traylor.

In 2013, the Austin Creative Alliance (ACA) officially welcomed Settecento as their newest sponsored project. With their help and guidance, we are beginning to pursue loftier marketing and business strategies, including the ability to accept donations. While we have been able to pursue similar goals on our own in the past, the support of an organization such as the ACA will allow us to broaden our mission of bringing music to Central Texas..
