Speaker Bios

Atossa Alavi, General Counsel, AlphaMicron, Inc.
Atossa is the general IP counsel at Alphamicron, a leading liquid crystal technology company involved in research, development, and manufacturing of the world’s first flexible, LCD-based tinting technology, using their unique e-tint® electronic sunlight protection system for various applications, including military goggles and sunglasses, ski and sports goggles, motorsports visors, automotive mirrors, and solar powered windows. Atossa handles all aspects of the company’s IP strategy, including creating and maintaining world-wide patent and trademark portfolios; determining and developing a protection strategy for the trade secret inventory; working with the business development group on negotiation and construction of NDA, licensing, joint development, and supply agreements; developing an employee IP education and training program; supervising outside counsel; and managing the enforcement through contracts and litigation. Recently, Atossa taught a course on Intellectual Property Business and Strategic Planning as an adjunct professor at CWRU School of Law.

Asad Khan, Chief Technical Officer, Kent Displays
Founded in 1993, Kent Displays, Inc. is a world leader in the research, development and manufacture of Reflex® No Power LCDs for unique, sustainable applications including electronic skins, writing tablets, smartcards and eReaders. Dr. Khan has primary responsibility for authoring the development framework for Reflex technology to meet the overall company strategic plan, directing a growing internal team of scientists in the implementation of the framework, and playing the lead role in managing various strategic relationships with suppliers and joint development partners. Dr. Khan joined Kent Displays in 1995 as a Research Engineer. He has since held roles of increasing responsibility, most recently as the Vice President of Technology and as a member of the Executive Committee. He has published over 60 papers in U.S. and international journals and possesses over 15 U.S. and international patents (with several applications pending).

Mark McDougall, Associate, Calfee, Halter and Griswold, LLP
Mark works closely with clients to find creative solutions to their IP related issues. He assists clients in strengthening their IP positions for product lines, developing IP for new products and building the overall value of their IP portfolios. Mark also works with clients to manage their worldwide patent portfolios. He further counsels on patent clearance and due diligence matters, including patent portfolio analyses and validity and infringement opinions. Mark’s litigation experience includes patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition and contract claims. 

Jes Warren, General Counsel, Phycal, Inc.
Jes Warren is General Counsel of Phycal, Inc., a renewable energy and products company based in Highland Heights, Ohio. Jes holds a B.S. in both Environmental Engineering and Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School. As a licensed patent attorney, Jes engages in all aspects of intellectual property management including licensing, joint research development, and crafting of protection strategies. She is also active in fundraising activities, contract drafting, resolving employment issues, and overall risk management. 

Georgia Yanchar, Partner, Calfee, Halfter and Griswold, LLP
Georgia is partner at Calfee, Halter and Griswold with substantial experience litigating patent, copyright, trademark and false advertising disputes for clients in various fields, including Internet transaction systems, software, medical products, pharmaceuticals and consumer products. She also regularly advises clients on freedom to practice projects, and enforcement and licensing of intellectual property rights. Georgia has taught as an adjunct professor of trademark law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and she is a frequent guest on the syndicated radio program, Entrepreneurs Club Radio.
