NJ Parks & Lighting Seminar: Wildlife-Sensitive Lighting Certification

Completion of this course earns 6 AIA Continuing Education Credits for Architects and Landscape Architects, and confers Certification in Wildlife-Sensitive Lighting Design®. by The Zoological Lighting Institute™. This Symposium offers training in the importance of parks/wildlife areas, as well as education in the application of existing wildlife protection regulations towards implementation of innovative wildlife-sensitive lighting design strategies. Wildlife sensitive lighting design is an ever growing concern.

Parks and designated wildlife areas are incredibly important for human communities. In addition to providing much needed recreational opportunities, they contribute significantly to environmental health and resiliency. Natural lighting cycles keep parks and wildlife areas ecologically viable, yet require sensitivity to maintain. Exterior artificial night lighting and light emissions from glass windows degrade habitat and reduce biodiversity by interfering with the photobiology, sensory ecology and environmental cues that determine living processes. Balancing ecological challenges with other human needs is delicate, but can be accomplished.

Community parks and designated wildlife areas are particularly important as nesting and feeding grounds for wildlife, but also in how they inform the public as to how lighting ought to be used in their own, more developed areas. This session teaches leaders to address habitat degrading light in parks and designated wildlife areas, so that the public can follow suit to reduce the glaring problem of light pollution in New Jersey and beyond.
