Larry Hughes, clarinet & soprano sax and Nick Ariondo, composer & accordionist

Hughes and Ariondo present a world premiere performance of Artie Shaw's Clarinet Concerto as arranged by Ariondo for clarinet & accordion -- with works of other composers including Benny Goodman, Lew Pollack, Astor Piazzolla, and original compositions by Nick Ariondo himself. A collaboration of scintillating sounds pairing some very different reed instruments (yes, accordions count!)

Larry Hughes, clarinet & soprano saxophone, is described by critics as “superb…outstanding…with musical warmth and rhythmic precision!”  A versatile musician from classical to jazz, Larry Hughes is in great demand -- He has traveled the U.S., Germany, Italy and Japan. Upon hearing Hughes in concert, the great Russian cellist Rostopovich commented “Marvelous clarinet playing!” He performs with the Los Angeles Opera, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and is principal clarinetist with the Santa Barbara Grand Opera. He can be heard in movie scores by John Williams, in concert with Andrea Bocelli, The Three Tenors, and the popular Broadway musical Wicked.

Nick Ariondo, composer / virtuoso accordionist: A double Grammy Award Winner with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Ariondo has worked with music icons from Paul McCartney to Placido Domingo. His playing was featured in the Academy Award-Winning film Life of Pi, music by Mychael Danna. The Los Angeles Times called Nick Ariondo a preeminent accordionist….a force to be reckoned with!” and none other than Zubin Mehta has called Ariondo is a brilliant success! A recipient of 25 ASCAP Awards for his compositions, arrangements and innovative performances, Ariondo became the first American to be awarded Italy’s Ancona Prize for his riveting Kalamatiano for Viola and Free-bass accordion. Visit NickAriondo.com. His CD release Trilucence featuring Larry Hughes is available at cdbaby.com/cd/ariondo.
