Series Title: Next Generation Manufacturing – Competitive Strategies for Success

This three-part series is in partnership with IMEC (Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center) the focus will be on innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement for the manufacturer.

·        Lean Product Development: Innovating the Process

o   (4-hours) – February 22 (8:00am-12:00pm)

o   Tom Babin, IMEC Manufacturing Specialist

o   Lean product development can assist with the development of a process for product development. Implementing a process can help reduce time to market, and reduce start up and manufacturing costs. In addition, the training will equip employees with tools that will help more effectively manage the project and create cooperation and teamwork between departments. The ½ day session will introduce companies to the basic concepts of Lean Product Development. The instructor will demonstrate tools that can help with specific product development challenges, including improving product differentiation, improving time to market, reducing product cost, reducing risk, and integrating the product development team.

Training Within Industry: Job Instruction and Understanding Workforce Training Needs

o   (4-hours) – April 26 (8:00am-12:00pm)

o   Mary Hallock, IMEC Manufacturing Specialist

o   IMEC’s Training Within Industry’s (TWI) program is a standard way to address the essential skills needed by supervisors, team leaders, and anyone leading others. The program creates an environment in which jobs are performed the same way, by all team members, and where problem solving is done at the operator level. IMEC’s manufacturing specialists can help your company get back on the path to skilled workers and improved job performance through the three proven, systematic training modules: Job Instruction, Job Relations and Job Methods. During this four-hour working session, your team members will learn about the concepts of Job Instruction for Standardized Work. The objective of JI is to help supervisors develop a well-trained workforce resulting in less scrap and rework, fewer accidents, and less tool and equipment damage. You will learn how supervisors are taught how to effectively break down a job for instruction, emphasizing preparation of the operator to learn, how to give a proper demonstration, identifying the key points in the job, observing the operator perform trial runs, and tapering off coaching while continuing to grow.
