Farmstead Arts is proud to present the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo in recital on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Farm House at 2 PM performing "An Afternoon of Spanish and Latin American Romantic Duets" featuring music of Piazzolla , Rodriguez, Brouwer, Lennon/McCartney, Ponce, Machado, Jobim and Albeniz.
Hailed as a “revelation to hear” by The Washington Post, the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo’s phenomenal musicianship places them solidly at the top of their field. Their innovative programming, matchless technique and ensemble precision, combined with their commitment to expanding the repertoire for guitar duo make them a stand-out chamber ensemble in every way.
Newman and Oltman’s concert tours have taken them to world cultural capitals and premiere venues across four continents. The Duo has demonstrated extraordinary stylistic breadth in their collaborations with such diverse artists as author Frank McCourt (“Angela’s Ashes”), composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and fiddler Eileen Ivers.
The duo’s latest CD, Music from Raritan River (MSR Classics 1298), will be available for sale at the reception following the recital. The CD, which was hailed by Fanfare Magazine as “top notch” and “a winner all around”, features a collection of world premieres commissioned by the duo over the past decade. The Duo has served as ensemble-in-residence at New York’s Mannes College of Music since 1987. Michael and Laura are founders and artistic directors of the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes, which takes place every summer in New York City (www.mannes.edu/guitar). They also are founders and music directors of New Jersey’s Raritan River Concerts and the Raritan River Music Festival (www.RaritanRiverMusic.org). Farmstead Arts is a not for profit, volunteer-run arts center located at 450 King George Road in Basking Ridge, NJ at the historic Kennedy Martin Stelle Farmstead. The center offers classes, art shows, concerts and workshops by professional and emerging artists in the performing, visual and practical arts. The farmhouse, which dates back to the 1700’s, is listed on the National and State Historic Registers, along with the English barn and other outbuildings. The center sits on a bucolic four acre parcel of land that is nestled above the banks of the Passiac River.
