Event Details

NewBo City Market's first annual BBQ & Brew event aims to provide local and regional bbq food producers and homebrewers with a venue to gain exposure to the public and serve their quality food and beer.



Beer Tasting

The number of attendees to the beer tasting portion of the event is capped at 200. Attendees wishing to attend the beer tasting portion of the festival must pay $25 in advance or at the door. Paid attendees will have their IDs checked, be banded, and issued a tasting cup. 


Beer Tasting VIP 

There are also 50 VIP tasting tickets available for $50 each. VIP attendees will be allowed to enter the beer tasting event 30 minutes early. VIP attendees will also receive their event tasting cup, an event tshirt, as well as a limited edition NewBo City Market BBQ & Brew mug. 


General Event

This event is open to the public. Attending the BBQ portion of the event is free. Attendees may purchase as much or as little BBQ food as they desire. There will also be alcohol for sale.


Please note: Vendors and competitors should arrive no later than 10:00am and be ready to for guests by 11am.


To enter the homebrewing competition, you must register in advance,

All beer will be judged and the winner will be crowned the NewBo Beer Boss, receive a medal, a commemorative apron, and be featured on our website. 

  1. This contest is open to amateur brewers
  2. The following are ineligible
    1. i.  Persons who have not yet reached their twenty-first birthday as of the event date

ii.Persons who are affiliated with a commercial brewing establishment.            

iii.The beer entered must have been produced by the amateur brewer on their own equipment. Beer produced on commercial equipment or Brew-On-Premise is not allowed

  1. c.     The Following must be returned no later than July 15th to 1100 3rd St Cedar Rapids IA 52401
    1. i.  Completed entry form

ii.Entry fee of $10

  1. A maximum of two brewers and one beer per entry
  2. Brewers are allowed a maximum of two entries. The entries must be, in the opinion of the event organizers,  distinctly different
  3. Brewers must provide:
    1. i.  A minimum of five gallons or four cases of 12-ounce bottles (96 total bottles). Glassware is provided for tasters. You must supply your own dispensing equipment. 
    1. .     Each entry will be provided with one-half of an eight-foot foldable table and one chair.  There will be two entries at each table
    2. .     Entries will be limited to a maximum of 24
    3. .     There are no style restrictions.
    4. .     The brewer or brewer’s representative must remain at the serving table for the duration of the event, even if s/he runs out of beer to serve. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of any prizes.
    5. .     There will be two separate contests which run concurrently
      1. a.     There will be a judges table with three judges
        1. i.  Judging order will be determined by random draw

    ii.A Steward will be responsible for delivering the beer to the judging table

BBQ Vending

All local and regional food producers may register to vend during the event as long as they are licensed to do so. The fee to vend food during the event is $30. 

If you do not have the proper licensing to vend food, you may apply for a Temporary Food Service license with the Linn County Public Health. This MUST be done and your license must be displayed during the BBQ & Brew event.


BBQ Competition

All BBQ food vendors may also enter an optional contest to be crowned the NewBo BBQ Boss, earn a trophy, a commemorative apron, and be featured on our wesbite. Entrance to the BBQ competition is $10. Each BBQ competitor may submit one dish per $10 registration with no more than 5 total entries.

All entries will be judged by a panel of three judges for creativity, taste, and overall appearance.
