Possibly the only orchestra of its kind inside or outside of Cuba, Orquesta La Moderna Tradición dedicates itself to the performance of classic Cuban dance music, especially the lilting grooves of the danzon. A legendary ballroom style that developed from the synchronization of African and European music in Cuba, danzon lends the groove of Afro-Cuban drums to the refined riffs of flute and violins. Orquesta La Moderna Tradición performs classics of the genre along with original compositions designed to keep the tradition alive and kicking. In addition to danzones, Orquesta plays the gambit of traditional and modern Cuban styles, from sones to songos, from cha-cha-cha to timba. A portion of the proceeds benefits La Peña Cultural Center. Special New Year’s Eve menu in Café Valparaíso. Call (510) 841-3800 for dinner reservations.
