Event Details

Are social media a curse on societies, as Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan stated during the Gezi Park protests? Or do they foster freedom of expression and democracy? A rat race has begun between state institutions and internet users: censorship and governmental force against new tools and ways of communicating. This discussion explores the battlefield and sheds light on the role of journalists in this ever-changing environment.

The RIAS Berlin Commission – founded in recognition of the merits of RIAS Berlin (Radio in the American Sector) – promotes German-American understanding in the field of broadcasting. This event also acknowledges the special transatlantic relations between Germany and the United States.

See www.goethe.de/washington for the list of panelists. Organized by Deutsche Welle & RIAS Berlin Commission.
