Fab Lab DC's 2012 Fall Speaker Series
New Media Culture in Architecture and Design
by Jonathan Grinham
Friday evening, November 2nd:
Friday: 7:30PM - 9PM Light refreshments.
Join us for a presentation + Q & A by Jonathan Grinham, who will discuss the role of "appliance architectures" in shaping the social and environmental fabric of space. His talk will explore how the new media culture has become an integral part of the design process of architects and designers, sparking a re-emergence of computationally embedded, responsive environments.
Jonathan Grinham is a Visiting Lecturer in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Catholic University of America. He is also a project designer at StudioTwentySevenArchitecture in Washington, DC. Jonathan received a Bachelor of Architecture and Masters of Science in Design from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on the areas of architectural robotics, computational design and digital fabrication. Current research projects focus on the implications of interconnecting, virtual and physical environments with building envelope systems through emerging building materials.
Jonathan will also be leading a hands-on, two-day, Arduino Weekend workshop @ Fab Lab DC starting Saturday, November 3rd @ 10AM and continuing on Sunday, November 4th. Click here for more information and/or to register for the weekend workshop.

In the spirit of MIT’s Fab Lab community outreach project, FAB LAB DC is a high-tech, fabrication laboratory/community workshop in the heart of the Nation’s Capital to advance creativity, innovation, and collaborative projects.
FAB LAB DC fosters the creative community by providing access to digital fabrication technology, rapid prototyping, and the global Fab Lab network. Fab Labs enable people to use technology to create, experiment and produce, shifting the paradigm away from people merely “consuming” technology toward using technology to create solutions.
With a focus on life-long learning and emphasis on investigative teamwork, FAB LAB DC is bringing a range of educational opportunities for people of all ages, including access to the international Fab Lab network and Fab Academy, which extend opportunities for information sharing, research, and broader social impact.
FAB LAB DC is for local community members, life-long learners, inventors, entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals.
