Event Details

As entertainment becomes more accessible and digestible, the stars of today become familiar to us, attainable in a way that celebrity has never been in the past.

The purpose of this project was to take today’s most familiar form of celebrity, the YouTube creator, and capture them in an analog way; shot on a 500cm Hasselblad on black and white film and lit with hot lights. The stars and starlets of glamorous Old Hollywood, who also lived in a new golden age of media, were immortalized in film; a process left behind by the digital age. I pay homage to the film lighting greatness of George Hurrell and celebrate the imaginative and enterprising spirit of the YouTube creator in this project all about contrast.

Special thanks to my lighting guru Mari Mendez who shares my love of light and whose experience as a DP and grip on film sets helped me immensely in creating these images. To my fabulously talented style team; Wendy Diaz (hair), Maribel Moreno (makeup), Sara Medd (wardrobe) and Elizabeth Kott (wardrobe). Thank you Elizabeth and Closet Rich for bringing vintage pieces for us to play with.

Robin Roemer

Robin specializes in lifestyle and portrait photography. She worked in NYC for almost 10 years before making the move to Los Angeles with her wife and their neurotic schnauzer Arthur in 2013. Robin began early in her career as a photographer and photo editor at MTV Networks where she had the opportunity to photograph musicians and the local scene before leaving to work for herself in 2008.

Robin’s work has been published in New York Magazine, The New York Times, Elle Decor, O Magazine, and InStyle. Robin has had the pleasure of working on campaigns celebrating body diversity for Dove (Show Us Your Skin Campaign) and Levis (Unbuttoned), and had the unique opportunity to shoot for non-profits and initiatives such as Save the Children, Move to End Violence, The Clinton Global Initiative, and Women In Music. Her celebrity roster includes Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, The B-52s, and many more. Her work has been shown in galleries in both NYC and LA and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
