The New England Silverlight Guild (NESLG) is organized to promote and encourage designers, developers, and innovators of all skill levels to share, laugh and grow our skill and knowledge around Silverlight, Expression Blend and Windows Phone 7. We meet on the 3rd Monday of every month alternating speakers at the Microsoft New England Research and Development (NERD) Center in Cambridge, MA and at the Microsoft Farmington Office in Farmington CT.
Our November 2010 speaker will be presenting at the Microsoft Farmington CT facility.
John Garland is a Senior Consultant at Wintellect and has been developing software professionally for over 12 years, having spent most of his career working on high-performance video and statistical analysis tools for premier sports teams, with an emphasis on the NFL, the NBA, and Division 1 NCAA Football and Basketball. John is an active presenter in the New England .Net Development Community, having spoken at recent Code Camps in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
This session will introduce the fundamental concepts needed for attendees to start developing their own applications with Silverlight for the new Windows Phone 7 platform. Concepts to be presented range from basic fundamentals including Basic Controls, Navigation, Application Lifetime, and working with phone software and hardware services. The talk will also include some advanced concepts such as Notification Services, using the Bing Maps control, and using the new Reactive Extensions.
John joined Wintellect in 2010, where he has worked on enterprise systems using Silverlight. Prior to joining Wintellect, John worked for Burntsand Consulting, working with both large and small enterprises using .Net technologies for applications including purchase management, logistics, and insurance solutions. John lives in New Hampshire with his wife and daughter, where he is active in the New England development community, speaking at Code Camp and User Group events. When he isn’t finding cause for yet another upgrade to his WMC-based home entertainment system, he occasionally turns to motorcycling and Florida Gator Football to unplug. He is a graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering.
