New Challenge is an annual ideas competition for students of The New School who are committed to working on local and global social and environmental challenges in innovative ways. Its purpose is to allow students the chance to develop socially innovative ides and produce tangible real world projects, products, organizations, and the like aimed at solving problems in their communities. Students from across The New School are encouraged to apply.
Applications are judged according to clarity of its purpose, demonstrated level of understanding of the addressed problem, potential for sustained and meaningful impact, strength of the presentation, leadership capacity, and the degree of collaboration utilized or needed to fulfill its mission. A panel of judges (including faculty, administrators, alumni and outside experts) selects winners that will receive up to $10,000 in awards to implement their ideas.
In addition, this year students who intend to apply to New Challenge can also participate in the Social Innovation Bootcamp, a series of interactive workshops on four Saturdays during fall semester. Students can select to join up to 12 different workshops on social impact strategy, fundraising, strategic communications, leadership, legal issues and other topics that will help you develop your New Challenge proposal. Winners also receive awards, significant mentorship and further workshops, and have the opportunity to become clients of diverse classes at The New School.
