                              4:30-6:00 PM            Lecture and Discussion

Massachusetts has long had statutes requiring continued eligibility for an ex-spouse's health insurance.  These unique laws, while affording protection to many, have gaps and do not apply in every situation.  In addition, state health reforms enacted in 2006 and more recent federal reforms under the Affordable Care Act may impact families going through divorce and other transitions such as a child graduating from college. Clare McGorrian has consulted to family law practitioners and mediators in many  and varied matters involving health coverage.  She will address some of these issues that may arise in such cases, including:

  • Post-divorce health insurance rights in general
  • Special issues for same-sex married couples
  • Impact of state and federal health law reforms
  • Health plan options for low-income clients

Speaker: Clare McGorrian represents individuals in cases involving health and disability insurance benefits.  Before opening her practice, Ms. McGorrian served as senior attorney for public interest law firm  Health Law Advocates.  Ms. McGorrian holds degrees from Northeastern University School of Law and Harvard University.  She teaches at Suffolk University Law School and New England Law Boston.  She has spoken and written extensively on health care access issues, including health insurance after divorce.  Among other publications, she is the author of the Health Insurance chapter of the Massachusetts Divorce Law Practice Manual (MCLE 2012).
