Shut up and Show it to me: A crash Course on writing sketch comedy with a focus on the visual

SATURDAY 2/9 2PM - 430PM

The workshop is designed to teach the skills needed to write and produce a visually engaging piece of performance based art within the genre of sketch comedy.  This workshop will discuss the general elements of sketch writing then lead participants through a series of exercises focused on visual offers.  By the end of the workshop participants will have created original works of sketch comedy in collaboration with other workshop members.

Al-don Schraeder is the head writer for the sketch comedy group “Mon Frere” and one half of the sketch comedy show and podcast “Unstoppable Failure”.  His festival participation includes the New York Sketch Festival, The North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival, and Boston Improv’s Geek Week Comedy festival.  His full length Harry Potter themed parody play “Hufflepuffed” has received wide acclaim and has been performed across the state at venues such as Raleigh’s Burning Coal Theater and as the special comedy presentation at the 2012 Con Carolinas Science Fiction and Fantasy convention.

A.J. Schraeder is a sketch comedian based out of Greensboro North Carolina.  His one man sketch show “Thunderstood” has been performed at comedy festivals across the country including the San Fransico Sketch fest, The New York Sketch Festival, and the Philly Sketchfest.  In 2010 the show won Greensboro’s largest comedy contest “The Ultimate Comic Challenge” and in 2012 Thunderstood was awarded the title of best sketch group at the ShadowBox Live’s 4th annual sketch comedy contest judged by SNL original cast member Garrett Morris.  In addition to his solo work A.J. is currently the artistic director of the “Mon Frere” sketch comedy group, one half of the sketch comedy show and podcast “Unstoppable Failure”, and a regular performer at Greensboro’s award winning improv theater “The Idiot Box”.  He received his MFA from UNCG in 2005 and regularly teaches both improv and sketch writing classes.
