Event Details

Thousands of Bay checkerspot butterflies formerly flitted across Edgewood's grasslands, but the population began to crash in the '90s. By 2002, the last butterfly had disappeared. Join conservation biologist Dr. Stuart Weiss on a stroll into the butterfly habitat at Edgewood where he will explain the mystery of this disappearance, and describe the exciting activities that are in progress to reintroduce this threatened species to its home territory.

This walk covers approximately 3 miles of trails of moderately sloping terrain. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, and sunscreen. In order to prevent introducing non-native plant species to this sensitive area, your shoes should be clean of soil and seeds. This walk is geared to adults, but capable, attentive children 10 years and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Heavy rain cancels.

Meet at the Clarkia Trailhead on Canada Road. If you are coming along I-280, exit at Edgewood Road and head west toward the mountains. Turn left at Canada Road and continue under the freeway overpass. Park on the dirt strip on the freeway side of Canada Road just south of the I-280 onramp.

Please visit Friends of Edgewood for information about other events at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve.
