Sandy Gooch, Founder, Mrs. Gooch’s Natural Foods Markets
Through her highly influential chain of full service natural foods stores in the Los Angeles area in the 1970s, '80s and '90s, Sandy Gooch set a new standard for product quality, marketing, and retail service for an entire generation of today’s retail leaders, including Alfalfa’s and Whole Foods Market (to which she sold her stores in 1993). Today, Sandy serves on the University of Southern California Entrepreneur Program’s Advisory Council, and also on the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is a proponent of education and healthy school lunch programs, and with husband Harry Lederman, serves as an advisor to a number of natural, organic and sustainable products companies.
Harry Lederman, Former VP of Sales, Nature’s Best
Seeing an opportunity with his family’s business after serving in the military in Europe during the Vietnam War, Harry Lederman was the first in 1970 to introduce the Bean Bag Chair to the U.S. market. After that nationwide phenomenon and driven by a passion for food and health, Harry joined Southern California natural products distributor Nature’s Best as VP of Sales. He later founded a natural products brokerage and in 1986 developed a line of frozen foods. As an advisor to his wife Sandy Gooch, Harry helped enhance customer satisfaction strategies at Mrs. Gooch’s Natural Foods Markets; the couple also were original investors in Elephant Pharmacy.
Cheryl Hughes, Founder and Owner, The Whole Wheatery
Cheryl Hughes has owned and operated The Whole Wheatery since 1983, a 10,000-sq.-ft. natural foods store and restaurant employing more than 50 people in Lancaster, CA. Through her store, she has helped many small businesses launch their products and grow their markets. Cheryl brings an independent grocer’s perspective to boards on which she has served, including Citizens for Health, Natural Products Association, and Organic Trade Association. Additionally, Cheryl serves on the Natural Share Group of the Food Marketing Institute, the leading trade association of the supermarket industry.
