Event Details

Did you know that pollinators are responsible for pollinating nearly one-third of every bite of food we eat?

In 2007, the U.S. Senate designated the last week in June as National Pollinator Week! The purpose of National Pollinator Week is to raise public awareness of the importance of the bees and other pollinators that are needed to produce 80 percent of our flowering plants and one third of our human food crops.

Come join the GTM Research Reserve on June 22nd for a day celebrating pollinators like bees, birds, butterflies, and bats!

Pollinator Day Agenda:

  • 11:00am - 11:45am: University of Florida's Bee Biologist Dr. Glenn Hall will introduce species of native bees in Northeast Florida
  • 12:00pm - 12:45pm: Florida Master Beekeeper Bo Sterk will discuss Colony Collapse Disorder. This problem effects the health of our honey bees and the economy associated with pollinators
  • 1:00pm - 1:45pm: Filmographer David Montgomery will showcase never-seen-before videos of Native Pollinators on local wildflowers

During the interim between 10:00am - 2:00pm in the Native Plant Garden families can enjoy...

~ Pollinator-friendly plant sale!

~ Samples and sale of local honey by the St. Johns County Beekeepers Association!

~ See a working beehive from local beekeeper, Joan Kramer!

~An appearance of the Florida Honey Queen and her retinue!
