The first National Poetry Slam took place in San Francisco in 1990, marking the beginning of an artistic phenomenon that has taken the country by storm. This summer, the National Poetry Slam returns to the Bay Area to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Hundreds of premier performance poets from North America and Europe will convene in Oakland for a week of slam poetry competition, educational workshops, and community outreach events that will attract the attention of thousands of people in the Bay Area.
The National Poetry Slam is an annual poetry slam championship tournament, where teams of poets gather to share their work with the community and to compete against each other for the national team title. The festival is part championship tournament, part poetry summer camp, and part traveling exhibition. Staged in a different city each year, the National Poetry Slam has emerged as spoken word’s highest profile showcase!
