Here in LA on the National Day of Civic Hacking we will have just elected a new mayor; what better time to show the city and the country what the LA tech community can contribute than by being part of our civic hack day in Boyle Heights?
The event will bring together students, citizens, entrepreneurs, and software developers to collaboratively create, build, and invent new solutions using publicly-released data, code and technology to solve challenges relevant to Boyle Heights, our neighborhoods, and the city of Los Angeles.
This special AT&T Mobile App Hackathon, focused on civic hacking and is designed for attendees (technical & non-technical) to build apps/mobile apps, get fed, compete for prizes across different categories and most importantly: meet new people and scout for teammates to work on new or current projects. Our hackathon will introduce you to the latest cutting-edge tools and APIs as well as allow you to access data sets provided by the city of LA.
Developers will have the chance to generate solutions for community problems in Boyle Heights and all of LA while inspiring local high school students about mobile app development.
To make this event even more interesting, there will be a Maker Faire taking place adjacent to the Hackathon, where attendees will have the chance to play with innovative new technology while learning about the diversity and cultural richness of the Boyle Heights community. Organizations including LA Makerspace and Two Bit Circus will demonstrate how fun technology can be by showcasing 3D printers and other awesome exhibits. We have currently capped off our numbers for non-technical participants. Those interested in attending the Maker Faire can drop by Saturday afternoon without registering.
We Supply: Quick presentations and code samples that help to bootstrap your hacking, food to keep you going, and caffeine to keep you awake, along with technical senseis and mentors to assist you in building faster and smarter apps while incorporating new tools. We’ll also have specific civic data challenges that you can work on as part of a team.
You Bring:Your laptop, skills, ideas, and enthuaism for civic change. Come with a collaborative, team-focused mindset and/or team up in advance on Twitter/Facebook/Google+ via @HackforLA. Whether you are a backend person and code in Ruby/PHP/.NET or a designer and work with Illustrator, a student, or a data geek you are invited to attend this event. Every group needs a good balance of talent and your development skills are needed!
Event Schedule. The following is a list of the weekend’s agenda:
Saturday - June 1st
10AM - Saturday Morning - Kickoff with breakfast, networking, and developer dating which leads into idea pitches and team formation
10AM - Saturday Morning - A quick "Introduction to Boyle Heights" information session led by the i.am.angel Foundation
11AM - Saturday Morning - Speakers present (please see below for list)
Noon - Pitch ideas and form teams + Lunch
10PM - Satuday Evening - End of the day 1
Sunday - June 2nd
10AM - Sunday Morning - The fun continues with an all day hackathon. Work with the teams that you formed on Saturday to produce the app spec’d out. Senseis will be available throughout the entire event to help you code up your solution. App submissions will be accepted throughout the day with a deadline of 4PM.

4PM - Sunday Evening - Pencils down. Please sign up your teams to present via this link: http://hackforla.challengepost.com/ Pitches start promptly at 4PM and are limited to three (3) minutes per team. No powerpoints unless you are only presenting an idea.

Participant Parking: There will be street parking available around the Technology Center. Since we are expecting a very large crowd at the venue this weekend, please consider carpooling or taking public transportation if possible.

|Alex Donn, Senior Marketing Manager at AT&T, is based out of sunny Seattle! His passion is educating developers young and old about mobile application development best practices through events like hackathons that fuse the collective interests of multiple technology and business leaders. Catherine Geanuracos leverages technology and media to create global movements that respond to the most urgent social, environmental and political issues of our time. She's the founder and CEO of New Economy Campaigns, a digital strategy firm focused on social value projects. Clients include Saban Brands, Splunk, Girl Rising, IKEA, Millennium Partners, and the Energy Foundation. Prior to New Economy, she oversaw multiple components of Live Earth during three years as its General Manager. From 2004-2006, she helped to shape innovative programs for MoveOn.org, using technology to expand opportunities for political engagement. John Yaist, Technology Evanglist at Esri, is a Map Geek through and through, recalling the Inner Nerd with a story of asking for the Ohio Almanac on his 10th birthday. Troubleshooter of geographic databases for years, recently entered into the world of web services and Python programming and has taken to coordinating Hackathon presence with Esri. Originally from The Midewest, currently lives in Palm Springs, California, which means he now regards anything below 90 degrees as jacket weather.
Eytan Elbaz is currently the Co-founder of Scopely and of Deep Dive Media. He previously served as Google’s Head of Domain Channel from April 2003 through September 2007. Prior to Google, Eytan was Vice President and founding member of Applied Semantics (formerly Oingo), which was later acquired by Google.
|Joaquin Beltran is the Program Manager for Bixel Exchange, the emerging tech center at the LA Area Chamber of Commerce. Bixel Exchange launches this Summer and will provide advising, educational events, and connections to help grow the LA tech community. Joaquin’s entrepreneurial experiences include expanding his family’s car dealership, creating a financial literacy canvassing campaign in East Los Angeles, and developing a mentoring platform called Mentorvine.||
Steve Reneker is the General Manager and Chief Technology Officer for the Information Technology Agency of the City of Los Angeles since January 2013. Prior to that, he served as Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) for the City of Riverside and Executive Director for SmartRiverside, a non-profit organization since 2005. Prior to joining the City he worked for Dell in business development, and has worked in IT for over 30 years at the County of Riverside, City of Aurora in Colorado, Eastern Municipal Water District and the City of Los Angeles. He graduated from Cal State University San Bernardino with a BS in Management Science and was born and raised in Riverside.
|Shevy Magen is a Director of Consulting Services for CGI's U.S. Enterprise Markets with client and business development responsibilities for identifying and delivering systems integration, intellectual property, consulting, and managed services for CGI's public sector clients in Southern California and Hawaii. Luz Castillo is an Information Services Specialist with the United States Census Bureau. One of her major responsibilities is making Census data accessible and user friendly to new and existing data users. She informs community based organizations, business owners, chambers of commerce, local governments, local media and educational organizations about Census data concepts and programs and provides hands-on-training on how to access data through the Census website. The most rewarding part of her job is giving community leaders access to data that will help them apply for grants; use data to make informed decisions as they plan programs and allocate funds; and, evaluate their programs and/or policy decisions.
|Mark Greninger is the Geographic Information Officer of the County of Los Angeles. He graduated from Stanford University in 1996 with a degree in Environmental Geology, but quickly became passionate about GIS and has been in the field since then. He began his work at the Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco. After building a GIS system for the EPA, he moved to the County, where he new oversees the deployment and effective use of geography for the County’s 100,000 employees and 10 million residents.||
Wiqar Chaudry is the director of product management for NuoDB, Inc. with over a decade of experience in database systems and web technologies. He has been responsible for designing large scale data warehouses for the fortune 500 and has played key roles in several data centric start-ups as a solutions architect, sales engineer, and product manager. Academically, Chaudry holds a BBA in Finance from Temple University, and an MS in Computer Information Systems from Boston University. In his spare time, he writes a blog on collaborative economics. |Carrie Freeman is a leader at the intersection of business and positive impact. As a partner at SecondMuse, Carrie is responsible for the overall success of the organization in co-creating prosperity. Prior to SecondMuse, Carrie spent 15 years with the Intel Corporation most recently as the Director of Sustainable Business Innovation pioneering strategies such as a corporate impact investing fund and developing technology market solutions to solve global sustainability challenges including climate mitigation, adaptation and water. Carrie formed the corporate sustainability group and directed corporate-wide efforts working with key stakeholders to ensure industry leadership. She has had numerous advisory and board positions including with the U.S. EPA, Water Innovations Alliance, the Technology Venture Corporation, Packard Foundation, the Nature Conservancy, the Permaculture Credit Union, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, World Policy Institute, LAUNCH, the government of Costa Rica and several cross-industry consortia. In 2012 she was selected as a New Mexico 40 Under 40 Business Leader.||Ozzie Lopez is the Executive Director of the Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center. Ozzie has focused his career in developing pathways toward self-sustainability while creating post-secondary education opportunities for teens and young adults. Ozzie Lopez was raised in East LA, and earned his B.A. in Political Science from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Master of Public Administration from National University.|
|Antonio Manning manages both philanthropic and community relations for JP Morgan Chase in the West and Southwest Regions of the United States. Antonio is also a founding member of African-Americans in Philanthropy, Southern California, a membership organization comprised of corporate and philanthropic executives. He is an appointed commissioner for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and serves on the Enterprise Leadership Advisory Council and the Advisory Board for the USC Center on Public Policy and Philanthropy.|
