WORKSHOP I (4:00 4:55)

A1     Bringing the Grocery Store to the Laboratory

Carol-Ann Pryor, Nassau Section Living Environment SAR

This workshop will provide you with multiple lab activities collected from various conferences that guide students through challenging concepts in the Living Environment Curriculum. Each lab uses food or simple household items that allow students to visualize concepts. The lab activates include building a lung, analyzing heredity, using dichotomous keys, and simplifying protein transcription and translation.

A2     Making Chemistry More Fun

Paul Monaco, Nassau Section Chemistry SAR

This workshop will present a series of original songs, skits, demos and ways to use toys and other devices to relate chemistry to everyday life. This will include color changes, flashes of light and explosions along with a few laughs.

A3     Physics Make and Take

Bill Leacock, Nassau Section Physics SAR

Come on down to our STANYS Physics workshop and leave with two make and takes, a cool wave motion demonstration which makes explaining motion of a point in a transverse wave a snap, and an alternating current demonstration that makes the nature of alternating current startling clear. Please preregister so I know how many sets to put together. Thanks!

A4     Using Booklets as an Alternate Assessment in Middle School

Mary Lobello, Nassau Section Intermediate Level SAR

Often, we cannot get a true picture of what our students know about a topic solely from traditional standardized assessments.  Using booklets, we can assess the knowledge of those students who typically perform poorly on classroom exams to see if they have mastered the topic.  Examples of tasks and rubrics, along with students samples will be shared.  Aligned with the CCLS for Writing.

WORKSHOP II (5:00 5:55)

B1     Common Core? Yeah we got that!

Carol-Ann Pryor, Nassau Section Living Environment SAR

This workshop will take common Living Environment activities collected from various teachers that have been adapted to meet the requirements of the common core in the areas of Math and English. This workshop is designed to give teachers the tools to adapt lessons that they know and love in order to meet the new demands of an ever changing curriculum.

B2    Acid Base Chemistry

Kathy Dubuke, Garden City HS

This session will focus on Acids and Bases but the activities presented can be used for any unit.  We will work on some make and take review activities and also Common Core and Regents preparation.

B3     Earth Science Games

Ken Abbott, Nassau Section Earth Science SAR

Looking for ways to increase student interest and excitement? Concerned with your students vocabulary skills? Interested in obtaining templates for creating your own games based on your individual content? Join us for a session where you will walk away with over 30 games and activities that you can instantly incorporate into your teaching repertoire. Disks and handouts abound. Please feel free to bring your favorite game or activity to share.
