There has been numerous research conducted on the Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) demographics resulting in the portrayal of the Asian community as the model minority. Is this fact or fiction? Are there facts that dispel the myths of Asians being the model minority? Ascend has conducted extensive research into the realties of the model minority. They have found that Asians have failed to reach senior leadership positions in corporate America. In fact they have called this the curse of the model minority. They have collected statistics and interviewed numerous Asian executives on why this phenomenon exists.
What can we do?
In this seminar, Wes will shed light on misconceptions about Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) and why so few APIs in corporate America reach the C-suite level. How many corporate CEOs, CFOs, or CIOs, or Senior VPs are APIs? In reality, there are far fewer than general demographics would suggest is possible and reasonably expected. What is preventing Asian and Pacific Islanders from achieving positions in the C-Suite?
We will focus on the following topics
• Where are the Asians? Are they represented throughout the leadership teams of global corporations?
• Why are there so few Asians? Are there cultural implications that affect their aspirations?
• Framework for success – What skills and behaviors are needed to overcome these barriers, myths, and or excuses?
Wes will share the insights on what behaviors and skills are needed by Asians to achieve their career aspirations, ultimately resulting in a more diverse senior leadership team. He will also share our leadership framework for corporate success.

• Understand and enlightenment of the “Myths” - Are they real or not?
• Learn what Asians can do to overcome these myths, limitations or excuses

About Wes Hom
Wes was former IBM Vice President in the Systems and Technology Group with global responsibilities for overall execution of IBM's mainframe investments, strategies, sales and emerging markets initiatives.
Today, Wes is an officer and Ascend board member. He advises on business development, diversity, and leadership development for Ascend’s global sponsors and respective organizations while managing the Ascend national organization. He is also principal at Business Innovation Services, LLC. helping investors and companies develop global strategies and plans to access next generation technologies and new business models.
Previously Wes was based in Europe as Managing Director and IBM Vice President in the Industrial Sector. He held a variety of challenging positions at IBM, including Vice President of Global Communications Sector, Vice President of the Capital Venture Group, and Executive Director for alliances between IBM and independent software vendors. Wes also spent several years in Asia Pacific as Vice President for the Advance Technology Solutions and Vice President of Networking hardware and software businesses.
Before going overseas, Wes went to Armonk, NY as an Executive Assistant in IBM’s corporate office serving the Chairman, Vice Chairman, CEO, CFO and Sr. VP of Human resources. Wes also chaired IBM’s Asian Diversity group, where he was recognized as the “conscious & guardian” to the Asian community throughout IBM. Wes served on the boards of many professional and community organizations such as the Business Advisory Council of Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) and International venture capital firms. He was recognized as one of the “2007 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business” by the Asian American Business Development Center and received Organization Of Chinese Americans (OCA) 2008 Dynamic Achievers Award. Wes is also the co founder of Corporate Executive Initiative and Co developer of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business Asian Leadership Program.
Wes is a graduate of NYU’s Stern School of Business with BS/CS and MBA degrees. He was a member of IBM’s Certified Client Director Profession through Advance Management Program at Harvard Business School.
