Myra Melford Bio
Myra Melford is a widely acclaimed pianist based in Berkeley. In 2013 alone, she was named a Guggenheim Fellow and received the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Performing Artist Award and a Doris Duke Residency to Build Demand for the Arts for her efforts to re-imagine the jazz program at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She was also the winner of the 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music. She has been honored numerous times in DownBeat’s Critics Poll since 1991 and was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as Pianist of the Year in 2008 and 2009 and Composer of the Year in 2004.

Han Bennink Bio
In the niche-oriented world of major-league jazz, it's almost unfashionable to be so multi-faceted a player as Han BenninkBennink is one of the unfortunately rare musicians whose abilities and interests span the music's entire spectrum, from Dixieland to free. His straight-ahead playing is absolutely convincing -- his time is solid, his sense of swing strong, and his technique flawless. He also possesses the requisite qualities of a free jazz virtuoso; Bennink's ability to interact quickly and creatively with horn players and pianists is great, as is his ear for timbral contrasts. What ultimately makes Bennink special is his manifest love for the music, a love that inclines him to tear down the cardboard walls that too often separate different schools of jazz. At his best, with colleagues who share his all-encompassing stylistic embrace, Bennink plays the continuum of jazz as an instrument unto itself.

Ben Goldberg Bio

From 1992, when his group New Klezmer Trio released Masks and Faces and "kicked open the door for radical experiments with Ashkenazi roots music" (San Francisco Chronicle) to 2013’s simultaneous release of Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues (featuring Joshua Redman) andUnfold Ordinary Mind (featuring Nels Cline), which the New York Times noted for “a feeling of joyous research into the basics of polyphony and collective improvising,” clarinetist and composerBen Goldberg has shaped a career through relentless pursuit of musical truth across many genres and styles, resulting in the Downbeat Critics’ Poll naming him the #1 Rising Star Clarinetist in both 2011 and 2013.

Ben Goldberg grew up in Denver, Colorado. He received his undergraduate music degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a Master of Arts in Composition from Mills College. He was a pupil of the eminent clarinetist Rosario Mazzeo, and studied with Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano.

In 2012 Ben premiered Orphic Machine, a ten movement song-cycle based on the poetical writings of Allen Grossman. Commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works and performed by an all-star nine-piece band with Carla Kihlstedt on vocals, the Los Angeles Times calls Orphic Machine “knotted and occasionally spooky composition marked by dazzling interplay.” A 2013 Grant from the Shifting Foundation enabled Ben to record Orphic Machine, for release in 2014.
