Though Richard Strauss is known primarily as a composer of tone poems and operas, he made several important contributions in chamber music. The cello sonata showcases both Strauss’ lyrical melodic writing for cello and his considerable understanding of the piano. Closing the programat Markham Vineyards is Robert Schumann’s fiery piano quintet, one of the best of the genre. Sandwiched in between are three well known bon-bons in unique arrangements for four violins.
The program includes Martinu: Serenada II for two violins and viola
Strauss: Cello Sonata, Paginini: Caprice no. 9, Pujol: Il Palermo
Monti: Csardas, and Schumann: Piano Quintet.
Enjoy a complimentary glass of Markham Vineyards wine at intermission!
