The Old Watermill by Herman Herzog (1832-1932)

You are invited to join a special tour of the Anschutz Collection at the American Museum of Western Art, led by the museum’s esteemed curator, Darlene Dueck.

This remarkable collection of paintings is displayed salon-style, and is essentially a survey of the history of the development of American Art as it pertains to the West from the early 19th century through the age of industrialization. Here you will see examples from all of the schools that contributed to that development, including Expeditionary Artists (George Catlin, Alfred Jacob Miller, John Mix Stanley), The Hudson River School (Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran), The Rocky Mountain School (Worthington Whittredge), Interpreters of the Old West (Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Charles Schreyvogel), the New Mexico schools (Ernest M. Hennings, Ernest Blumenschein, Walter Ufer), American Regionalists (Thomas Hart Benton, Steuart Curry) and illustrators and muralists like N.C. Wyeth and William de Leftwich Dodge.

During the relatively short period of history illustrated by this collection, the West was transformed from Indian territory unknown to most inhabitants of the eastern United States into a settled region.  Within only 90 years after the Louisiana Purchase, the “Old West” of Indian buffalo hunters, mountain men, pioneers, gold-seekers, and open-range cowboys had passed into history.  Come see how the course of American art has been enriched and significantly changed by its “Western Experience.”*

The tour will be limited to twenty-five persons.
