Event Details

Calling all toddlers! Little dancers, you won’t be the only ones having fun in this class; it’s designed to entertain not only you, but your parents, too! This is a chance for Mommies and/or Daddies to get out for a fun activity without having to hire a babysitter. Grown-ups, you'll get some exercise and learn the basics of Latin dance while your little ones get practice with balance, movement, rhythm, and interpretation of music. This will be an activity that is fun, social, and stimulating for everyone!

The aims of this 40-minute class are to give parents an opportunity to exercise and the beginnings of a new hobby; to provide a social activity that is inclusive of a variety of ages; to give toddlers an early start in rhythmic movement to music; to increase their physical confidence; and most importantly, to provide parents and their favorite little people with a special way to connect.

Summer session: Beginning June 5, classes will meet Wednesday mornings for ten weeks (June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7) at the following times, depending on age:

Erin L.

Erin comes from a family of mostly Irish dancers, but she didn’t find her own place in the world of dance until well into adulthood. Growing up, she had dabbled in ballet, tap, jazz, East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, and ballroom dancing, but none of these had felt like the right fit. Latin beats had always drawn her in, though, so when Hurricane Rita sent her to Dallas for evacuation, Erin jumped at the chance to sign up for a salsa workshop there. Circumstances led to a move there soon after, and thus began her discovery of the dances that resonated with her core.

Erin took classes and quickly joined a salsa performance group, Salsa Guanaca. She found thrill in performing, and enjoyed being involved in both local events and shows on the road, mainly in Houston, Austin, and Shreveport. But the highlight of that life-changing era was Salsa Guanaca’s trip to perform at the West Coast Salsa Congress in L.A., where Erin found herself amid a vast sea of international dancers from all walks of life. The energy, the spinning, the rhythm of thousands of people dancing their souls out on a giant ballroom floor at the feet of renowned Latin musicians – it was pure enchantment for someone who had never imagined such an event even existed.

Erin’s love of Latin dance began with salsa, but soon grew to include bachata, a sultry dance with Dominican roots. In between performances, she enjoyed partner-teaching group and private lessons in both dances.

Now settled in New Orleans with her husband and toddler, Erin’s social dancing days are on pause – but her two-year old son is her inspiration to keep the music playing.  Having heard Latin beats since well before birth, he keeps his parents entertained with his discovery of really cute dance moves.

Like most art forms, dance is a powerful unifier. Unlike most art forms, dance connects us not only emotionally or symbolically, but also physically. On a family level, it can help us rise above the stress that life throws at our closest relationships; on a community level, it leaves no room for exclusion, bringing people together regardless of forces that might otherwise keep them apart. With this ideal in mind, Erin is creating a set of dance classes that will create stronger bonds both within and between families.
