Event Details

The University of Missouri-Columbia chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) is hosting the 27th Annual Lloyd L. Gaines Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. at the Reynolds Alumni Center on the University of Missouri’s main campus. This annual event pays tribute to the late Lloyd L. Gaines who fought to integrate the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law in the late 1930’s. (Missouri ex rel Gaines v. Canada, 305 U.S. 337)

This year’s keynote speaker is Mr. Nimrod (Rod) Chapel, Presiding Commissioner at the Administrative Hearing Commission (AHC) for the State of Missouri. Mr. Chapel received his law degree from Tulane University in 1995 followed by an LLM in Tax from Washington University in St. Louis in 1997.  Before being appointed Commissioner Mr. Chapel worked for two Kansas City law firms as an associate and served as Director of Missouri’s Labor and Industrial Relations Board. Mr. Chapel is also president of the Jefferson City, Mo., NAACP chapter and is actively involved in MU Law School’s diversity mentorship program.

BLSA’s fundraising goal for this event is $15,000. Proceeds from ticket sales and donations will help MU-BLSA award two academic scholarships to deserving law students. The scholarships recipients will be announced on the night of the banquet, Saturday, February 2, 2013.

The University of Missouri-Columbia’s Black Law Students Association (MUBLSA) was founded in 1971 as the Black Law Student Society. MUBLSA's primary purpose is to deal with the special concerns of Black law students and lawyers. The Association acquaints students with the professional opportunities, problems and responsibilities they will have as practicing members of the Bar.

MUBLSA encourages full participation of all students in the activities of the School of Law and the University. It also attempts to foster closer contact with present members of the legal profession. MUBLSA has involved itself in numerous activities in the past, including sponsorship of a statewide advisory group on Black student affairs at the Law School, and group sessions with visiting high school students.
