Event Details

Join the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Film Society as we present the 2014 Spring series of Movies in the Garden in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden! All programming for the evening is free with admission to the event. To kick off this series of classic cinema we’re screening Singin' in the Rain on Friday, April 18th. Activities and food start at 5pm. The film will begin at 7:45pm.

This outdoor film series in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will focus on classic movies that represent some of the most highly regarded films from cinema's "Golden Age" (1927-1963). These films, most of which were created through the Hollywood studio system, are marked by plots that progress through time in a linear way, are based on character-driven action (in traditional three acts), and the continuity (or "invisible") editing style. The style is "classical" because it is based on the classical principles of literature and art, those of balance and symmetry.

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor star in Singin' in the Rain, one of the greatest and most successful musicals ever filmed--filled with memorable songs, lavish routines and Kelly's fabulous song-and-dance number performed in the rain. Set during the advent of "talkies," Don Lockwood has risen to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era - paired with the beautiful, jealous, and dumb Lina Lamont (played by Jean Hagen, in an Oscar-nominated performance). But with the introduction of talking pictures, Lockwood finds his career in jeopardy after audiences laugh when they hear Lamont speak in her shrill voice for the first time.
