Join the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Film Society as we present the 2014 Spring series of Movies in the Garden in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden! All programming for the evening is free with admission to the event. To kick off this series of classic cinema we’re screening Casablanca on Tuesday, May 13th. Activities and food start at 5pm. The film will begin at 8pm.
This outdoor film series in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will focus on classic movies that represent some of the most highly regarded films from cinema's "Golden Age" (1927-1963). These films, most of which were created through the Hollywood studio system, are marked by plots that progress through time in a linear way, are based on character-driven action (in traditional three acts), and the continuity (or "invisible") editing style. The style is "classical" because it is based on the classical principles of literature and art, those of balance and symmetry.
One of the most beloved films of all time, this 1943 Best Picture Oscar winner stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in roles that made them cultural icons. Bogart (in an Oscar-nominated performance) stars as an American expatriate who runs a nightclub in French-controlled Morocco during World War II. And even though he would prefer to sit out the war in his café, the tightening conflict—and his newly rekindled interest in an old flame (Bergman)—eventually forces Rick to take sides. THe film won director Michael Curtiz a Best Director Oscar and was also nominated for Academy Awards in Cinematography, Editing, and Music.
Come before the movie starts for live music and art activities!
