Sheba International Leadership Council

The Sheba Medical Center (SMC) is the largest medical center of its kind in the state of Israel. Located in the suburbs of Tel Aviv, the most populated area of Israel, the Sheba Medical Center offers comprehensive, state-of-the- art healthcare services to over one million people. Our vision of excellence and professionalism, combined with our status as a level one trauma center has made us a national referral center for many hospitals throughout the country.

The Sheba Medical Center is a sophisticated academic center affiliated to Tel Aviv University - Sackler Faculty of Medicine. The SMC began in 1948 as Military Hospital number 5 which was established as an Israel Defense Forces medical facility. In 1953, Prof. Chaim Sheba transformed the hospital into a general medical center, treating civilian as well as military patients.

Today, the Sheba Medical Center is an 1800 bed facility serving as the leading provider of medical services and offering top professional staff, with cutting-edge technology. The SMC is actually comprised of two distinct hospitals. The General hospital houses Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetric and Gynecology, Pediatric Departments, and the Imaging and Laboratory Divisions. The Rehabilitation Hospital consists of the Geriatric, Psychiatric, Neurological and Orthopedic Rehabilitation Departments.

The following demonstrates some numbers regarding our yearly activities and the scope of Sheba Medical Center’s environment:

Admissions 80,000

Ambulatory visits 750,000

ER visits 150,000

Labors 9,000

Surgeries 35,000

Operating Theatres 30

This substantial output is operated by human resources as can be seen in the next table:

Physicians 850

Nurses 2,000

Para-Medics 1,300

Over the past 60 plus years, Sheba Medical Center has revolutionized medical care in Israel: pioneering Israel's first open-heart, artificial heart, congenital heart defect surgeries, founding its foremost rehabilitation facility, and introducing the most advanced medical technologies to Israel and the world.

Funding of this strategic and revolutionary medical center is the core mission of Sheba International Leadership Council (SILC). Based in New York City, SILC hosts several fundraisers annually as well events to promote awareness of current research and studies being done at Sheba.
