Motivating Conversations: Empowering Mothers to Meet Their Breastfeeding Goals
Wednesday, December 11, 2013
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Centinela Hospital Medical Center
Mei Ling Schwartz, MPH
Director of Physician Education, Health Education, and Staff Development at Kaiser Permanente
In this one-day seminar, expert Mei Ling Schwartz will familiarize participants with motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate better communication between breastfeeding mothers and the people who care for and counsel them.
Most mothers know ‘breastfeeding is best feeding’ yet they are ambivalent about exclusive breastfeeding. You will learn how to do a brief negotiation so that you can be effective even if you have very little time.
This workshop will also provide you with the knowledge and competence to apply effective strategies to support mothers from various cultural backgrounds to meet their breastfeeding goals. Specific case studies will be used to enhance cross-cultural communication skills.
Following the didactic presentations, participants will be able to:
- Describe three principles of Motivational Interviewing to enhance the patient/healthcare provider interaction;
- Utilize Motivational Interviewing techniques to help patients clarify their main concerns about breastfeeding and increase the mother’s likelihood of meeting her breastfeeding goals; and to
- Identify how culture affects communication about breastfeeding between a patient and her breastfeeding helpers.
