to honor

Monica Randall

Monica is a historic preservationist and author who began photographing the doomed North Shore estates at the age of fourteen.  Her first book, Mansions of Long Island’s Gold Coast, was published in 1980 and became a best seller.  This was followed by Winfield: Living in the shadows of the Woolworths.

Monica is the Director and co-founder of the North Shore Preservation Society which oversees a vast collection of research and original photos of the old estates along the North Shore.  The museum also houses the largest collection of Gold Coast costumes on Long Island.  The gowns, some dating from 1900 to the late 1930s, were rescued from the local estates that were being bulldozed during the 1960s.  This unique collection of vintage clothing, along with original photographs, is currently on display at the North Shore Historical Museum located at 140 Glen Street in Glen Cove New York.  That exhibit is open until September 3rd, 2013.

Monica’s original photographs have been exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and many of her costume photos are in a permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Monica is currently one of the feature writers for 25A Magazine, one of Long Island’s newest luxury magazines for the Gold Coast.
