Course Description:

In collaboration with JASPA, the Brooks Institute of Higher Learning is presenting the course, "Monday Morning in the Dysarthria Clinic." The emphasis of this course is clinical.  What one can do in a single session to establish the starting point for treatment will be featured.  The concern is less about typing the dysarthria and most about identifying what is wrong in the speech signal and in the speech production mechanism and then selecting treatment procedures to change what is wrong.  Rehabilitation rather than compensation will be the focus.  Respiratory muscle training, a new prosthesis for managing velopharyngeal incometence, and treatment programs for  speech abnormality resulting from spasticity and dystonia will be described.  Also a protocol for treatment of dysarthria in ALS will be described.  The place of oromotor exercises will be addressed.  The content of this course grows from the speaker's own daily clinical practice and the best the literature has to offer.  The aim will be for everyone to go away with something immediately useful even if it is just fresh reaffirmation of competence.
