Moms of Children with Special Needs
Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs and that job is magnified when you’re a mother of a child with special needs. Learning that your child has special needs is one of the most difficult things to accept. It’s not uncommon for a process of grief and mourning to accompany this news as your fantasies, desires and goals for that child immediately need to be altered. Once this occurs, you can embrace your child, needs and all, and recognize his/her unique and “special” gifts.
babybites is pleased to be able to continue to offer a support group for parents of children with special needs. It can be overwhelming making decisions in regard to the care, therapies and services your child needs and receives. This group is geared to provide mothers an opportunity to connect, share and learn from other mothers of special needs children in hopes of feeling less alone and overwhelmed.
· Share obstacles, challenges and frustrations in a safe space
· Reframe your expectations of development to be realistic for your particular child
· Explore new ways to relate to your child
· Manage your feelings and understanding of the outside world’s reaction to your child
· Share resources in regard to programs and opportunities for children with special needs
· Gain insight as to how best to navigate through systems such as Early Intervention, CPSE, CSE in order for your child to receive the best possible therapies and services
· See and experience your child for more than just his/her disability
· Learn to trust and accept that you’re making the best informed decisions you can

How old are the children of the moms in the group?
These gatherings are for mothers having newborn to elementary school age children. While the struggles at the different ages/stages may be different, overall you can learn/benefit from each other's experiences and still relate to each other around the special needs and challenges that come with that. Whether your child is on the spectrum, navigating Early Intervention, or coping with food allergies, making adjustments, creative solutions, finding community is common across the ages.
Do I bring my child to the group?
We ask that you make childcare arrangements so you may come to the group solo and truly focus on building connections with your fellow moms.
What if I have to miss a session?
Life happens (especially as a mom)! Do what you can to make it each week, but know that the program is valuable even if you have to miss some sessions. It's more about you getting 6 weeks of support (vs. 6 sessions). Much of what happens is between the sessions. One of the best parts? Developing friendships with so many amazing women.
Do you prorate for missed sessions?
We don't prorate our support groups for missed sessions as it's really about getting 6 weeks of support and solid friendships (vs 6 sessions). The group's facilitator often does email follow-up between sessions so you can get clued in to what you missed.
