The 2013 Momentum Conference will focus on the topic of church mergers. Many churches today are realizing that by joining forces with another congregation they can create a more dynamic, fruitful ministry. Have you ever considered a church merger? Could you forsee your church one day enfolding or being enfolded by another church?
In a single community, one church could be experiencing a decline in attendance and a budget crisis while another has thriving ministries that are attracting hundreds of new members. The struggling church may desire a vibrant children's ministry, but there are no young families, or a multi-cultural worship experience, but there is no diversity. Merging a successful ministry with a stagnant one has the ability to breathe new life into a church community.
Jim Tomberlin, author of Better Together: Making Church Mergers Work will be sharing his expertise as a church merger consultant at Momentum. He will be offering practical guidance on how to best navigate through the concerns of the congregations and the strategies for a successful, unified ministry.
Merging is not easy. The culture and dna of the lead church must now be infused into a new community of people, people who have different traditions and perspectives. The receivng community has to accept the leadership of the other, willingly enfolding into it, being taken over, re-born. It is a process wrought with emotion and difficult conversations for the faithful pew-dweller.
As with most sensitive situations, communication is key. Good communication can make the difference between a confused and conflicted congregation and one that feels fully informed and involved. Educating a congregation restrains gossip and vain concern.
Kem Meyer, author of Less Clutter. Less Noise. and Communications Director at Granger Community Church, has a passion for helping churches to successfully communicate, both internally and externally. Church mergers require an effective communication strategy and Kem will offer insight into how this can be accomplished, as well as overall communication principles for your church.
