For our first tour, we are featuring what is commonly known as the birthplace of the Case Study Program that John Entenza helped to found. Designed in 1937, the home is 850-square-feet of space that melds together indoor and outdoor living seamlessly. Meticulously renovated in 1998 by Michael Folonis Architects, the residence maintains the characteristics of the original home, yet holds up to todayʼs standards of contemporary functionality.
AIA|LA Announces The Modernist / Contemporary Tour:
Architect Guided Tours of Projects Designed by Founding Fathers of California Modernism renovated with a contemporary twist!
AIA Los Angeles is known for our Home Tours Series during the spring and fall seasons that show the edgy glamour Los Angeles contemporary residential architecture has to offer. With this new tour series -- The Modernist / Contemporary Tour -- we strive to explore the architecture that put Los Angeles on the map from the 1930's to the 1960's.
The Modernist / Contemporary Tour will feature one modernist project every month, from September thru December, that has been renovated by a contemporary AIA|LA Architect member. The objective is to diversify the Organizationʼs tours and pay homage to Modernist California architecture by including vintage projects that incorporate the sustainable technologies often used in more contemporary homes.
"Our take on Modernism has a contemporary twist. Projects featured in this tour series are renovated gems that are by no means obscure, but are not necessarily at the forefront of peopleʼs minds as being suited to fit today's needs and lifestyles," said AIA|LA Associate Director, Carlo Caccavale, Hon. AIA|LA. "With this tour, we are going back to the past to highlight and honor historic projects that have been updated with a contemporary edge."
Featured projects are designed by such founding fathers of California Modernism as Rudolf Schindler, Gregory Ain and Harwell Harris. From the International Style to the Case Studies, get ready to see some of the best renovated Modernist projects that LA has to offer!
Modernist / Contemporary Tour highlights include:
- Architect guided tours every half hour by the architect that renovated the project
- One featured project at a time allows for closer connection with the home
- Exclusive tour is limited to 100 ticket buyers only
- Tickets only $25 (AIA|LA Members) or $35 (Non Members)
- Learning Units available for AIA Members
