All volunteers must first register their presence and then register for one Team activity for the day. All volunteers are encouraged to bring an item for this activity. It can be a bag of rice, of any size; pots, pans or fllatware; or a children's book..

Volunteers will remove rice from larger bags and make 5# bags of rice

Volunteers will receive full bags of rice, remove the air and close the bag

Volunteers will apply labels to bag of rice and pack completed bags of rice for transport to LSG offices

Volunteers will pick-up rice at CCC and transport it to LSG offices, unload and store rice

Volunteers will bag selected pots and pans to create a kitchen kit

Four teams of will leave Clarkston Community Center to do community clean-up. Each team will include 15-15 people. Wear old clothes, bring gloves, grabbers and bring bags (if you have them). This event will be cancelled in the the event of inclement weather.

Four team of people will do clean up on the Montreal corridor and at apartment complexes. Wear Old Clothes | bring gloves, grabbers and bags (if you have them). This activity will be cancelled if weather is inclement.

Event Details

A Day of Service for all to honor

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

on Janaury 21 from 9am to 1pm

You are invited to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by participating in a Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2013.  Youth and adults will gather at the Clarkston Community Center to work on the following projects:

  • Project 1 - Rice for Refugees  
  • Project 2 - Literacy UMC at Clarkston Community Center  
  • Project 3 - Literacy Clarkston at Avalon Apartments  
  • Project 4 - Pots, Pans & Flatware for Refugees 
  • Project 5 - Clean-up Clarkston

Important Information:

This is a free activity open to all who wish to serve. You are not required to bring anything other that your willingness to serve.  

 

The following information may be useful as you plan for your day of service. 

  1. MLK Day of Service begins with our gathering promptly at 9am.   
  2. Individual projects are scheduled for 3-4 hours (estimated completion).  All projects should be complete before 2pm.
  3. Clean Up Clarkston - outdoor community clean up projects could be cancelled if weather is inclement.  

 

About the Projects

 

Project 1 | Rice for Refugees  

With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Lutheran Services of Georgia, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta, and ELCA Southeastern Synod 

Before you come:  Collect bags of rice and bring them with you  Larger bags are more economical | Rice will be re-packaged into family-sized bags to be distributed to newly arrived families being resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia.  Admission is free but you are encouraged to contribute rice or pots and pans 

o    Please collect large bags of rice and bring with you to MLK Lutheran Day of Service.  Volunteers will repackage rice into usable packages that will be given to refugee families in the Atlanta area.

 

Project 2 | Literacy UMC at Clarkston Community Center 

With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Clarkston First United Methodist Church

Before your Come:   collect your gently used children's books and bring them with you for distribution to local children

 

This projects includes Reading Stations, book sorting and book distribution 

  • You can read to small groups of Children
  • You can sort incoming books donations
  • You can distribute books to children by ages 
 

 Project 3 | Litrary Clarkston at Avalon Apartments 

With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Clarkston First United Methodist Church

Before your Come:   collect your gently used children's books and bring them with you for distribution to local children

Project 4 |Pots, Pans & Flatware 

With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Lutheran Services of Georgia, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta, and ELCA Southeastern Synod 

Before you come: Collect pots and pans and bring them with you  Miscellaneous pots and pans will be boxed up into sets for the apartments of newly-arrived families being resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia.  Admission is free but you are encouraged to contribute rice or pots and pans 

   

Here’s what we need (new or used}:

Sauce Pans (any size)

Frying Pans

Soup Pot

Flatware

 

Dutch Oven

Baking Sheets

Roasting Pan

 

 

·      Other project materials needed: extra heavy duty garbage bags to pack each kitchen kit in; Extra large zip lock bags for flatware (1-2 gallon size),

·      Children will make “Welcome” cards to go with each kitchen kit (materials provided by LSG)

 

 

 Project 5 - CleanUp Clarkston & Avalon Corridor

With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from  Clarkston Community Foundation  

 Teams of volunteers will  go to various sites in the City of Clarkston to complete outdoor projects that includes cleaning, removing, bagging and helping to improve the community. Four team of 15-25 people are planned. These projects will be cancelled if weather is inclement.
