Spend a day with Philadelphia photographer and artist Leah Macdonald at Shoot at RED Studio and learn the basics of combining photography and mixed media. Whether a fine art, wedding, or boudoir photographer, this workshop will introduce unique, new opportunies for you.
Explore Leah’s ever expanding life with beeswax and photography (from the oldest school of view camera and darkroom to the new school of digital ink jet printing) and painting. Each day brings new ideas, favorite colors and experiments with layers and textures. She discovered this amazing blend of photography and encaustic painting in graduate school while experimenting in the studio, and since has been making encaustic photographs for fine art exhibitions and art fairs.
A photographer, a painter with light, photography is her passion above and beyond all. She dreams and sees in photographs and is constantly thinking of how to capture and hold precious moments and beautiful subjects.
Leah teaches darkroom photography at The Philadelphia Art Institute, shooting with Holgas, 35mm, medium format and view camera, and develop negatives and print in the darkroom on fiber paper. She believes developing an image in a tray of liquid and watching the whites turn to blacks and objects emerge from nothing is still one of the most beautiful experiences. She was a professional printer for five years and her art happens in the darkroom, textures happen, cracks, lines and drawings in her relationship to paper and light and developer…. every part of a photograph to me is the story that an image needs to tell.
Students will learn:
- The history of the encaustic medium
- How to paint with beeswax
- How to combine encaustics with photography
- Techniques for creating surface textures and mark-making
- and you will receive an introduction to painting with oils and paintsticks
Limited to six attendees
