F-1 for Beginners (8:00am-12:00pm)

This session will review introductory advising concepts for international student advisors, academic counselors, career coaches, and others who work with students on F-1 visas. Additionally, this workshop will provide an overview of the federal regulatory and SEVIS structure, basic regulations that impact F-1 students, and the pivotal role of the DSO in the advising process.

Presenters (session 1): Nichole Matuska (College of St. Benedict/St. John's University) and Molly Hoffman (University of Minnesota)

Location (session 1): Woulfe Alumni Hall South

Presenters (session 2): Jim Porter (Augsburg College) & Eric Kroetsch (University of Minnesota)

Time: Half-day/8:00am-12:00pm (both sessions)

International Enrollment Management: An Overview (8:00am-12pm)

This workshop will introduce participants to the concepts of International Enrollment Management. Using distinguishing factors from your institution, you will develop strategies to promote, admit and retain international students. Analysis will show you how to maximize results and stay within your budget.

If you are experienced in either International Student Advising or Admissions, this workshop will help demystify the other side.  Those familiar with both admission and advising will likely find the content remedial.

How to Develop Intercultural Communication Skills (1:00pm – 5:00pm)

This session will review fundamental theories related to intercultural communication and examples of how to apply them to your practice. It is also a facilitation workshop in which participants will learn about Cultural Detective in quite a detailed way and will learn a lot of practical facilitation skills, which they will find applicable with Cultural Detective specifically and with intercultural and diversity work in general.

J-1 for Beginners (1:00pm – 5:00pm)

This workshop will provide a conceptual foundation, practical knowledge, and skills for those with an existing J program and those looking to begin J advising.  It will provide an overview of the J-1 Exchange Visitor program, regulations that govern program sponsors, the 12 and 24 months bars and the two-year home residency requirement (212(e)).  This workshop will not cover the trainee, intern or graduate medical education categories. This is a hands-on workshop that illustrates J-1 concepts with the use of real life cases. Active discussion and participation will give participants an opportunity to practice their knowledge, enhance their skills and learn from each other.

Study Abroad for Beginners (1:00pm-5pm)

This workshop is geared toward new study abroad professionals as well as those interested in gaining new perspectives on day-to-day operations of a study abroad office.  Topics will include recruiting, advising, troubleshooting, pre-departure and re-entry programs, credit transfer, opportunities for returnees and program evaluation.  Presenters will attempt to tailor the workshop toward participants’ needs.

Presenters: Kimberly Neill (CEA Global Education), Raine de Campeau (St. Catherine University) and Jennifer Pope, Ph.D. (Adler School of Professional Psychology)
