Description

Engineers and clinicians passionate about minimally invasive capsule endoscopy are invited to an open one-day event which will promote dialogue and a better understanding of clinician’s needs and engineer’s capabilities.

After Professor Paul Swain, a pioneer in capsule endoscopy, has set the scene with his keynote address, the event will discuss Positioning & Localisation, Uses, and Sensing & Actuators. Each part will feature speakers approaching the subject from clinical and engineering perspectives followed by discussion and open idea sharing.

At the end of the event there will be a recap of the key findings and a summary will be distributed to all participants with follow up activity.

Attendee Outcomes:

  • Open cross-discipline dialogue
  • Better understanding of clinician/engineering needs/capabilities
  • Beginnings of a network
  • Roadmap of actionable engineering outcomes – list of practical challenges and clinical needs
  • Possible formation of joint working group

Capsule Endoscopy Competition

The Minimally Invasive Endoscopy workshop will host a competition to award seed-corn funding to new ideas in the area of capsule endoscopy. The aim of the award is to nurture these ideas to make them more competitive for larger funding awards.

We are looking for ideas that either meet an unmet clinical need and/or addresses technical challenges in the area of capsule endoscopy. All applications must have the involvement of a clinician or biomedical life sciences background and at least one person from a physical sciences or engineering background. One member of the application should have a fixed term or permanent contract at a UK institution.

The applications will be judged by an independent panel comprised of members from the clinical and technical organising committee and will be judged on technical and clinical merit. A prize of £5000 will be awarded at the workshop event to the winner in order to develop their idea.

We encourage applications for postdoctoral researchers, researchers who want to develop ideas in areas outside their area of expertise or independent researchers at the start of their careers.

To register your interest in taking part in this competition, please submit the application form by 17:00 GMT, Thursday 16 March 2017. The form can be obtained from richard.mosses@glasgow.ac.uk. This competition is only open to attendees of the workshop.

The winners will be asked to complete a short form after 6 months to update the committee members on the progress of the project and whether further funding has been sought.
